Final Project - Self Portrait

For my final project I want to do a self portrait. I want it initially to appear as an abstract composition, but closer inspection by the viewer will reveal a figure. I want to play with identity and loss of identity by using large geometric and solid shapes to create the form, as well as small bits of photography. I also want to print it fairly large.

  1. Will it kind of look like a mosaic of shapes and colors and then a figure hidden within? I'm kind of thinking of Where's Waldo but not in a bad way. I think it would be cool if it were kind of like that and then if you print it big it would be even better.

  2. This is the 3rd blog I've visited and and 3rd thats doing something with self portraits, including my own. I feel like this will either be everyone regurgitating the same ideas or we'll each have vastly different views of ourselves.

  3. Regarding the photography elements I am curious if they will be of objects that maybe you relate to, or of you directly. I think that some figural elements would be nice with all the abstractness, but a portrait not using those elements could be just as interesting, using objects to layout and create facial features.

  4. If you want to go big with this one, maybe using multiple prints to create a collage would be a multi-dimensional (and cheaper) way to do it. Using a big sheet of paper you could draw out the image and then paint it in with cut pieces of prints or something.

  5. I am excited to see this more in development. It sounds very interesting, but I'm sure I cannot quite envision what you are thinking of. I think the color pallet will have a strong influence due to the abstraction of the composition, and it being viewed more as shapes initially, and could really assist in achieving the tone you desire.

  6. I'm intrigued by your goal of printing larger, I think life size or bigger would be great. I also think that it would be visually appealing if you went back into the image after it's been printed and make actual physical marks using ink, paint, charcoal, ect.

  7. I am interested to see how you will execute creating the figure through geometric shapes and photographs. A couple questions I do have for you is how large do you want it? (just larger than the norm, or life size?) and how will you go about making it life size if you choose that direction?

  8. I like the idea of abstraction and ambiguity in the appearance of the figure. I am interested to see how you assemble the contour of the figure.

  9. I think this is a really good idea and I'm interested to see it play out. Are you planning on using the same geometric shape, like a hexagon or a square etc, or are you going to be using multiple shapes?

  10. It's a cool idea, but I'd like to see some of the shapes and images you plan to use just to get a better idea of what the figure shape will be.

  11. I would try to think of different ways your self portrait could be displayed that sets it apart from the other people doing self portraits. Perhaps breaking the image up into multiple panels or something could help!
